Moving Tips

Following are tips on successful moving. For information on packing your containers, please visit our Storage Tips page.

One Month Prior To Moving

• Make your reservation with your Door to Stor consultant.
• Get copies of any legal or financial records you need.
• Start pulling together medical, dental and school records including prescriptions and immunization records. Ask your existing doctor to refer you to a new medical provider in your new city
• Start to use things that can’t be moved such as frozen foods, bleach and aerosol cleaners
• Sort and discard unwanted items
• Donate any unused or unwanted items
• Confirm elevator, loading dock, and parking space reservations at origin and destination
• Make necessary travel arrangements such as airline, hotel, and rental car reservations
• Begin packing, clearly labelling boxes with name, contents, and new locations

Two Weeks Prior To Moving

• File a change of address form with the Canada Post. Notify them of your current and new address
• Notify registry of motor vehicles
• Notify and scheduled disconnection of all utility services at your old home and connection of them at your new home
• Notify gas company of change of address and to schedule disconnection of any gas appliances being moved
• Make arrangements for parking permits where applicable
• Make arrangements for babysitter/pet sitter for moving day as necessary
• Arrange time off from work to prepare for the move and be present on the day your containers are delivered

One Week Prior To The Delivery of Your Containers

• Confirm moving date and time with your Door to Stor consultant
• Provide your representative with new telephone number, cell number, and e-mail address
• Finish packing and assemble an "essentials" box. This will contain all of the necessary items for your comfort until you have your containers delivered at your destination. Be sure and include important paperwork such as your moving contract in this box
• Remove all permanently affixed items you wish to take from walls and ceilings (e.g. drapes, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans)
• Confirm that you have ordered locks, dollies and any other necessary supplies to be delivered with your containers

One Day Prior To The Delivery of Your Containers

• Consolidate clearly labelled, fragile boxes in one area. These will be loaded in to the containers last
• Separate and label items not intended for transport within your containers
• Isolate check book, keys, passports, plane tickets, cash, and credit cards and a copy of your Door to Stor contract
• Confirm telephones are in working- Charge your cell phone
• Defrost, drain, wash, and dry refrigerators and freezers
• Drain waterbeds
• Drain gas and oil from lawn mowers, generators, and snow blowers
• Disconnect propane tank from gas grill
• Clear walkways and driveway during inclement weather

Container Delivery Day

• Be present when your container(s) arrive in order to instruct the driver as to where place them
• See the list of packing tips located on the inside door of each container
• Have your locks readily available to secure the doors when you are done loading
